School at Sea

What is School at Sea?

School at Sea is a project in which I will be sailing for half a year and at the same time work on my schoolwork on board. From autumn to May holiday I travel with 37 fellow pupils on a Tall Ship to the Caribbean and sail back. At School at Sea, self-development and experiential learning are central. Which means:

Your personal growth and development is stimulated. You focus on your talents and you learn by doing, not just from books. You work on goals you set yourself, you use your powers and you develop new skills.

So you learn by doing; languages by speaking in the countries where you come, navigating things through the sea and learning about other cultures by being part of it. You are also responsible for cooking, you keep watch and you get Sail-Training, where you learn everything about sailing and the ship.

In addition, you are independently working on your regular schoolwork, so that you take new information in different ways.

School at Sea teaches you how to make a good planning,  how to ask good questions and it makes you more independent, because you can solve problems yourself.

The route

Vieuw the route below!

In the autumn holidays we leave the port of Ijmuiden, from where we start  the trip to the Caribbean. After leaving the cold Netherlands behind, we sail to the Canary Islands, to Tenerife, where we climb the Mount Teide. From there, we sail on to Cape Verde, and after two weeks we arrive in the Dominican Republic. There we make a hike to the Boiling Lakes and stay with the Rastafarians for a few nights, we continue  to Curacao and the islands of San Blas, Panama. We sail  and snorkel in the area of the Kuna Indigenas. From there we sail on  to Cuba, where we have to get to the other side of the island in small groups. From Cuba, we sail to Bermuda and from there to the  Azores. On Faial we make a Solo bivouac and then we sail back to the Dutch port IJmuiden.

School at Sea takes me on a fantastic journey of over 12,000  nautical miles!
