My motivation

Why do I want to join?

I would like to join School at Sea because it is a wonderful learning experience.

School at Sea will help me develop my skills further, such as collaboration, independence and self-confidence. Fun and adventure come first with me and I also find it very important to expand my worldview. By exploring other cultures, I get to know myself and others better. Another reason for me to want to join is friendship; with the people I get to know in the countries that I will visit during the trip, but also with the people with whom I work and live on the ship for six months.

I would like to gain new experiences in other countries and discover what my possibilities are and what more I can learn. School at Sea makes many things possible and ensures that I know what I want and what I am good at.

School at Sea teaches you to work together and you learn from each other. This is something that I find very important; that you can learn from each other.

Moreover, I find sailing a very enjoyable thing to do and this is also something that I would like to improve by doing. The idea of being responsible for cooking and having to share responsibility in the small, closed society in which you live on the ship makes me very curious as to my ability to learn this. I think this will help me on my way to independence.

When I get back from this amazing journey, I hope to inspire people, with my experiences and the loads of fun I had with these experiences, to go out on an adventure themselves.

My Motivation

Part of the registration from School at Sea is to send in your personal motivation, preferably in an original, creative way.

Photos and explanation of the motivation that I have sent in you can find below.

The motivation I have sent is in the form of a world map, which I painted myself. On the map you see several boats, from rowing boat to Tall Ship.  The idea behind this is that the boats on the map are my knowledge vessels, which are constantly developing, growing and strengthening.

The boats are along the route I am going to sail with School at Sea, and by boat I have arrived at a new location and my knowledge boat has developed.

And when I return to the port of IJmuiden, my knowledge boat is a big knowledge ship, full of new experiences and knowledge about other cultures, new people, the sea and distant countries!

How did I find out about School at Sea?

At my school, the Stedelijk Gymnasium Nijmegen, there is a number of students who have already participated in this project. I read  about this in our newsletter and actually wanted to come along right away.

After seeing a poster of School at Sea a while later, I took action and signed up for an information meeting.
